Seth Godin posts about made up numbers today. Specifically the idea that New York City has lost $903 million a year in lost wages due to DVD pirates. This is according to the MPAA.
As Seth says, that’s equal to 9,000 jobs paying $100,000 per year. Um, I want that job.
Obviously these numbers are a bit inflated or outright made up, but they’ve served their purpose in encouraging NY to pass laws and crack down on the illegal selling of DVD’s. But something else jumped out at me in the short Times article that’s linked to the story:
The criminals are selling duplicates – some good, some horrible – for around $1.50 a piece. And they’re selling a LOT of them. Wouldn’t you think the MPAA and studios would simply think to sell stripped down copies themselves for the same price and kill the market?
See, making a lot from people makes a lot of money. But making a little from a BUNCH of people makes even more.
