Two huge music publishing companies merged today to become ONE huge publishing company. I’m posting about this only because if you’re going to make a living in the industry, you should know what’s going on, and this article has a lot of information in it about the business side of music.
Of particular note is this gem:
“Music publishers control the rights to the melodies and lyrics of songs
and make money by licensing them to the record companies that sell CDs
and downloads, as well as to film and television producers, plus
ringtone and videogame makers. The business can be stable and
profitable, particularly when a publisher manages to accumulate a
catalog of thousands or millions of songs.”
