In continuation of my discussion of my three core focuses that I use to encourage people, I bring you question number 2: what’s the next thing you can do that will have the most impact towards your what and why?

Don’t Wait

I realize that answering my first question could take time, it should. This is your life we’re talking about and unless you’ve already spent time considering questions like mine, I’d be worried if you were able to answer quickly and easily.

But even without thorough answers, don’t wait to act. Pick an item off your list (you do have a list, right?) that will move you towards something, even if it’s vague.

Next Thing

Before you can choose the item that will have the most impact, you need to first understand the next thing that you can do.

  • It’s next: It is THE urgent task, or every urgent task has already been done so you are free and clear to do the next thing. If that’s not true about what you’re considering, you are not considering a true NEXT thing.
  • It can be done: If the task you’re considering involves waiting for someone/something else, it cannot be done, so it is not the next thing.
  • It can be done by you: If someone else needs to do it, it is not your next thing. This does not mean this thing doesn’t need to be done or that it won’t have impact. It just means that while someone else does that task, YOU can be doing another thing and effectively make TWICE the impact! It also may mean that your next thing will be completed in partnership with someone else.
  • It can be done by you now: You have everything you need to do the thing including the skills and abilities to do it. Now.

Impact Towards

Because my goal is to encourage people through writing, I need to make sure I do some writing everyday, preferably for blogs and book(s). Doing this everyday is extremely challenging in light of the 100’s of other things that I need to do too.

But here’s my main point, if I don’t write most everyday, I will never, ever encourage people through writing. Thinking about impact cuts through all the clutter and confusion to the heart of what matters most.

So what’s next for you?
