O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory above the heavens.
From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?

You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.
You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.

O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

– Psalm 8

A Pastor friend and I once discussed the prevalence of what he called “worm theology.” This is the false thinking that we are but worms compared to majesty and magnificence of God. While it’s indeed true that His ways are not ours and we are limited while He is not, this Psalm clearly points out the fallacy of believing we are the lowest things on earth.

Quite the contrary, we are just a little lower than the heavenly beings. Additionally, we are crowned with glory and honor too. The story of creation is one of growing complexity, energy and excitement. Starting with filling a void with something and moving through rock to plants to animals to…man. Each day brings a higher level of well, everything. Culminating in the crowning achievement of man and more specifically, woman.
Why do I care to write about this? Because of the why. We are meant to rule over the earth. YOU are meant to rule over the earth. Your earth. I’m not going green on you (though it is sad that believers in Christ aren’t leading the charge in sane and truth based discussions and creative energy innovations), I’m inviting you to live an intentional life. A life that you were meant to live here. Now. Today.

You are not a worm. Don’t live like one.
